Training Comparison

Hyrox vs CrossFit

Two of the biggest names in functional fitness — one is a race, one is a sport. This guide breaks down the movements, formats, and training stimulus so you can pick the style that fits your goals, or blend both without overtraining.

The one-line difference

Hyrox is a standardized race with the same eight stations every time. CrossFit is a constantly varied training methodology with unpredictable workouts. Hyrox rewards repeatability and pacing; CrossFit rewards range and adaptability.

Side-by-side

Format
Hyrox
Fixed race: 8×1 km run + 8 stations, same order
CrossFit
Constantly varied workouts, 5-30 min each
Movements
Hyrox
Running, sled, ski erg, row, wall balls, lunges, carries, burpees
CrossFit
Olympic lifts, gymnastics, monostructural cardio, plus everything Hyrox uses
Session length
Hyrox
60-90 min at race pace
CrossFit
8-25 min high intensity + strength
Skill curve
Hyrox
Low to moderate — runnable and scalable
CrossFit
Steep — Olympic lifts and muscle-ups take years
Community
Hyrox
Race-day events, individual + doubles
CrossFit
Daily class model, in-house competitions
Best if you like
Hyrox
Endurance racing, pacing, measurable PRs
CrossFit
Variety, strength + skill work, class energy

Movement standards

Both use functional movements, but the standards are set very differently.

  • Hyrox — movements and loads are identical at every event. A men's wall ball is 6 kg to a 3 m target. A sled push is 152 kg loaded. Divisions vary weight, not movements.
  • CrossFit — the sport uses movement standards published per event (bar height, rep counts, tempo). Daily class WODs scale movement and load to the athlete. Muscle-ups, snatches, and handstand walks are common.

Training stimulus

  • Hyrox is a hybrid endurance event. Aerobic capacity, muscular endurance, and grip dominate. Training bias: Zone-2 running, race-pace intervals, and repeatable station work.
  • CrossFit is general physical preparedness. It blends strength, power, gymnastics, and mixed-modal conditioning. Training bias: varied strength cycles, skill practice, and short intense metcons.

Which one should you pick?

You have a race calendar
Hyrox. The format is testable, and the taper is predictable.
You love variety
CrossFit. No two workouts look the same.
You want to lift heavy
CrossFit — Olympic lifts, squats, and deadlifts are core.
You're a runner adding strength
Hyrox. Running stays the anchor; stations add durability.
You travel constantly
Either, if programming adapts. Hyrox is easier to substitute in a hotel.
You want a community class
CrossFit. Group class is the model.

Can you train for both?

Yes, if you cycle priorities. Most busy athletes run a Hyrox-focused block for 8-12 weeks around a race, then swing back to CrossFit-style training for strength and skill in the off-season. The overlap is huge — running, rowing, wall balls, and lunges show up in both. What differs is the volume mix and the density of skill work.

FlexWOD

Bridge the gap

FlexWOD writes a daily session around your goal event — Hyrox race, CrossFit competition, or general fitness. It swaps movements when equipment is missing, biases volume toward your target style, and keeps your weekly balance sane whether you are at home, in a big-box gym, or on the road.

FAQ

What is the difference between Hyrox and CrossFit?

Hyrox is a standardized indoor race — eight runs and eight stations in a fixed order. CrossFit is a training methodology and sport based on constantly varied, high-intensity functional movement.

Is Hyrox or CrossFit better for beginners?

Hyrox is more approachable — the movements are simpler and the format is predictable. CrossFit scales well but has a steeper skill curve because of Olympic lifts and gymnastics.

Can you train for both?

Yes, if you cycle. Bias toward Hyrox for 8-12 weeks before a race, then swing back to CrossFit-style training in the off-season for strength and skill.

Which burns more calories?

Hyrox burns more total calories per session because it lasts longer. CrossFit is shorter but higher intensity, with a longer afterburn.
